Also, be aware that your rabbit may get very anxious, and rightfully so, by other animals on your walk outdoors. Rabbits may be seen as prey by dogs or other outdoor creatures, so be vigilant about who or what is around you, and keep your rabbit in close range so that you can jump in and protect him if necessary.

Losing a Rabbit (Due to Age, Sickness, Animal Attack, Etc.)

Even if you are extremely careful and attentive, it is best to be prepared in advance for the fact that the worst might happen. Remember, rabbits are very fragile creatures and susceptible to a host of medical conditions. They also have a relatively short lifespan (5-10 years in most cases), which can sometimes seem like the blink of an eye to us humans.

If you lose your pet rabbit, the most productive things you can do are to assess whether there was anything you could do differently next time, and to perhaps consider adopting another rabbit. There are many other rabbits out there who would benefit from being in a loving, compassionate home.

From the Mouth of a Rabbit Owner

It started off with a few extremely minor symptoms. I noticed that our rabbit had a little bit of runniness around the eyes. But since nothing else seemed really wrong with her, I figured it was nothing serious.

A little later, I noticed some discharge coming from my rabbits eyes and nose. This seemed more different than the wateriness I had seen before, but it still was not hugely alarming.

Pretty soon I began to change my mind. My rabbit started making some sniffling noises, which made me think she had caught a cold of some sort. She was breathing loudly, something I had never heard her do before.

I decided then and there to take my rabbit into my vet. I am glad I did, because they diagnosed her with acute pneumonia. They fixed her up and now shes home safe and sound. But I shudder to think about what might have happened if I had not noticed the changes in my rabbits health and if I had not already had a great vet for my little fuzzy friend.

Key Points Summary

Rabbits, just like any creature, are susceptible to a large number of medical maladies, some mild and some life-threatening. There are two main things you can do to safeguard your rabbit against such conditions.

First, do everything you can to keep your rabbit healthy. Feed a good diet, keep up good grooming habits, make sure he gets plenty of exercise, and so on. Some conditions, like maggots or muscle atrophy, can be easily prevented if you keep your pet clean and in good physical shape.

Second, make sure you are knowledgeable about the various maladies, so you can identify symptoms and be on the lookout for potential problems. By reading this section you have already taken a big step toward providing your pet with the best health care possible.
