The Birthing Process For Your Pet Bunny Rabbit
by Andrea Austin,
If all goes well, the mother will be able to give birth on her own. In some cases, though, you may need to step in. As soon as a doe looks like she is about to give birth, make it a point to observe her carefully and closely. If she appears to be having difficulty giving birth, you will need to get veterinary care immediately. More experienced breeders may be better able to help along the process, but new breeders should seek help.
Also, though it may be sad to contemplate, you will need to be prepared for the fact that not all bunnies survive birthing, or infancy. Bunnies are very, very fragile, tiny creatures. They also require intensive care and near-constant feeding. Even with the best care, some babies may not make it through. Such is the sad fact of life that all breeders must deal with.
Caring for Newborn Babies
Young bunnies should be check on regularly in the days and nights following their birth. As mothers tend to feed in the wee hours of the morning, you might want to check up on them a couple hours after midnight. Make sure they are all feeding well, and that the mother is helping them with the processes involved.
If a baby gets out of the nest or separated from the mother or the rest of the litter, be sure to put him back. Otherwise, he may get cold, and this can be fatal.
If the mother seems to be having trouble feeding (if there is no milk, for example), consult your vet. In the meantime, there are some rabbit formulas available that you may use instead. Consult a pet store or another breeder for advice.
The babies will take up most of your time for the first several weeks of their lives, so be prepared for almost as much exhaustive work as if you were the mother yourself!
Above all, keep in mind that this chapter is only to give you an overview of the subject of breeding and newborn bunnies. If breeding is something you want to pursue, you really need to give it a lot of thought and do your research ahead of time. After all, you are talking about bringing new lives into the world, and that is not something to take lightly.
Visit your local library, go online, call up local breeders and make sure you know the ins and outs of breeding. Plan carefully ahead. Donít jump into this without giving it due consideration and planning!
